WOW Gnus - August  2010

Hi All,

No new members to welcome this month unfortunately. I encourage all in WOW to gather near the WOW flag after your run to have lunch and discuss your run/walk. It would be great to get to know all those who have joined recently.

Thanks to all of you who read and answered my emails to compete for WOW in the relays. We are fielding lots of teams in both categories. Results next issue.

Ladies in WOW – if you haven’t contacted Carol or Jan yet to let them know you want a place at the Ladies camp, do so ASAP! It’s on Sat August 14th, the day before the Bell’s badge.

Read Anne’s bit to see what you missed at the WOW High Tea and what’s coming up next.

Cheers - Helen

WOW Gnus - July  2010

Hi All,

WELCOME

to new member Judy Wenban (W45). We look forward to meeting you near the WOW flag at an event soon.

CLUB EVENTS

– Gunapin Badge, well set by Ken D and Robert and organised by Brian A, was lots of fun and enjoyed by members and others who came along for the day.
- North Ledge was also well done by Lyn and Digby, controlled by Ken D and organised by Carol. Unfortunately, not many attended to take advantage of the thoughtfully set courses – report elsewhere in this issue.
-  Killamunda, set and organised by John and Ian D had great success on the other hand. Report elsewhere in this issue.

TRAVEL

– Ken and I have just returned from a week in Bali and then heading to Busselton and Albany.

COMING EVENTS

(bake before and help after)
– Marginata club relays on 1st August

FAREWELL Bob McCreddin

When Bob McCreddin died last month we lost long a time,  enthusiastic and respected member of our club. Several of us had kept in touch with him, since his illness prevented him from attending events and he remained interested in orienteering matters throughout those long final months.

For around two decades, Bob was at nearly all events provided by WOW, often as a major official, otherwise he would be helping out. He was a skilful and conscientious course planner and organiser as well as a persistently competitive runner, even though not always as highly placed as he would have wished.

He would usually be found near the WOW banner at lunch times, occasionally enticing family to come along. He also regularly attended club social occasions. Bob was a Club man but also believed OAWA should be more cohesive, sharing social occasions and working more closely together, so he might have been pleased at how more of his generation are doing that nowadays.

We will miss a quiet, cheerful, thoughtful and courteous Club member and offer our sympathy to Julie and the family.

Cheers - Helen

WOW Setters' Report  - Gunapin, 6 June 2010

Hi All,

What a great early winter's day for running around in the bush. We could make a sport out of this - oh we have.
The first port of call was to Steve Mcdowell the farm manager.  He was first rate, giving us free rein over the whole map.
I chose the lower western paddock as a base as this gave us access to good parking, ease of entry & close proximity to the best orienteering area.
Choosing to start on the most western area of the map gave Robert the chance to develop some great courses whilst  keeping it to a compact map size. This allowed lots of direction changes on the longer courses which hopefully had  the competitors guessing & proved challenging for them.

Thanks to Jack for his guidance & assistance in setting up the event.
Thanks to Brian for his organising & setting up the camp.
With Steve the farm manager allowing camping on the map quite a few people took advantage of this, even having a cosy camp
fire to sit around.
Thanks to all  the WOW grafters who helped make an enjoyable event.  Without these people who help collect controls,  clean up the site, dig the holes for the toliets,  chase up for maps  {it appeared we ran out of some courses} the day could not run as smooth as it should.
Thanks to Robert for doing all the technical side of the setting & producing great courses & to everyone else who I have missed - once again many thanks.

Ken Dalton - Co-setter

WOW Gnus - June 2010

Hi All,

WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS Jake Hannah (M21) and

Lucy Bowman (W21); Lesa Muir (W40); Ray Toomey (M60). We look forward to meeting you near the WOW flag at an event soon.

NEW CLUB RUNNING TOPS have finally arrived and have been seen at Mt Billy and Guildford events. They look great and I’m looking into ordering more for those who’ve now seen them and wish they had one – I’ll email the WOW list, so if you’re not on that and would like a top, please call me. I still have 5 club ‘dress’ shirts in various sizes – just call me to see what sizes I have.

CLUB EVENTS – Mt Billy, capably set, organised and controlled by, Russel, Cassie, Deb, Jane and Dan, was well attended and wasn’t it a perfect day for being in the bush? I still managed to attract 5 tick bites, despite heavy rain the week before. See event report elsewhere in this issue.

TRAVEL – Ian and Val are currently enjoying the warmth of the Kimberley, cruising around various bays. Greigs are off to South America and Komyshans to Europe for a few weeks, hoping to avoid winter? I sense a photo evening coming up. Gary’s ‘snaps’ from Africa set the bar very high though. Ivan has been to Ivory Coast a lot recently with work and has really enjoyed the experience. Mike is off to Canada to work for 2 years – we wish him good luck.

MENTORS – Ken Post is mentoring Ron Marcus this season.

Will Ron be beating Ken by September, as Glyn did his mentor,     Dan? If anyone else wants to be mentored/coached, call me or Carol (9446 3457) and we’ll match you up with someone suitable. This invitation extends to experienced club members as well as newbies.

COMING EVENTS

6th June - WOW is responsible for the Gunapin badge – please bring a healthy cake/slice AND offer to collect controls after 1pm.

12/13th June - Dryandra Double – MTBO on the Saturday, fun event at 4.30, quiz after dinner and Foot O on the Sunday – sounds like a fun filled weekend J J

Call me if you want a bed booked for the Saturday night

20th June – WOW event at North Ledge, set by L platers (first timers), Digby and Lyn Mercer, controlled by Ken Brownlie. Think back to your first few times as a setter and give them your support please.

Cheers - Helen
